HOBPACK - Compression of Printed Output in OS/390 and MVS

HOBPACK can compress data, so that the output of a file with print data will on an average be only 15% of the original size.

The product HOBLink RJE can receive PUNCH files that contain data compressed by HOBPACK and are transmitted transparent.

With the program MBPRIP01, it is easy to send compressed print output from MVS batch jobs to PCs.

The MVS batch job has to be modified, so that all print output goes to a temporary dataset first. In the last step of the job, the program MBPRIP01 reads the temporary dataset with the print output, translates the data from EBCDIC to ASCII and outputs carriage-returns and line-feeds as needed (FCB is interpreted).

Then the resulting data is compressed by the HOBPACK subroutine and the output goes to the JES2/3 output queue. This output can then be sent to HOBLink RJE, which will output the printer data in an ASCII file on the PC.

This ASCII file can be printed or also be viewed by an editor.
