The HOB Database Gateway Extension is an add-on
to the product HOBLink DRDA. It allows PCs to access
DB2 databases as well as VSAM and DL/1 data via TCP/IP without TCP/IP being used on the
the host side.
The Advantages:
The PCs do not have to be directly connected to the SNA
network. The connection can be made via a TCP/IP network, e.g. over the Internet.
No TCP/IP is needed on the host. In this way, the DB2/VM,
DB2/VSE and DB2/400 database systems, which do not allow DRDA access via TCP/IP, are
accessible from PCs via TCP/IP. Additionally, DB2/2, DB2/Windows NT, DB2/6000 and
DB2/MVS databases can also be accessed in this manner.
It is not necessary to install SNA clients on the client PCs,
minimizing the need for on-site support.
How It Works:
The "IBIPGW04" Gateway Extension is installed on a
server under Win32. A subsystem must be installed on the NT server that makes the
data available via APPC to the SNA network. Possible subsystems include HOBLink SNA
Stack (HOB APPC), Microsoft SNA Server, Novell NetWare for SAA or IBM eNetwork
Communications Server. The host communication is handled via LU 6.2.
