HOB Telnet Gateway Extension

FACE="Arial">HOB developed the Telnet Gateway Extension to allow PCs using HOBLink 3270 or HOBLink J-Term to access mainframes via a TCP/IP network, even though the mainframes are located in an SNA network. One major advantage of HOB Telnet Gateway Extension is that it allows you to open TCP/IP connections with the HOB Y protocol on LU0.

The Advantages:

  • The PCs do not have to be directly connected to the SNA network. The connection can be made via a TCP/IP network, e.g. over the Internet.
  • No TCP/IP is needed on the host.
  • It is not necessary to install SNA clients on the client PCs, minimizing on-site support.

How it Works:

The "IBIPGW03" HOB Telnet Gateway Extension is installed on an NT server. The PC and the NT server communicate via the TN3270 protocol.

A subsystem must be installed on the NT server that makes the data available via APPC to the SNA network. Possible subsystems include Microsoft SNA Server, IBM eNetwork Communications Server or HOB SNA Stack.

If HOBCOM is installed on the host, the communication can be handled via the HOB Y protocol. This protocol offers numerous advantages, such as encryption and data-traffic compression.
