HOBLink J-DRDA - the platform independent solution for accessing databases via JDBC

The introduction of the JDBC database interface represents a significant enhancement to the Java programming language. Building on Java’s pioneering platform independence, JDBC now enables you to access non-proprietary databases in heterogeneous environments.

HOBLink J-DRDA also includes the database query tool J-DBrowser.

Product Highlights

JDBC Type 4 Driver - Certified as “100% Pure Java”

HOBLink J-DRDA is written in “100% pure Java” and adheres to the Java strategy of “write once, run anywhere,” meaning it will run on any Java platform. The certification guarantees reliable access to all Java applications and Java applets that support JDBC. The JDBC Type 4 driver can be loaded via a web server or installed locally.

Accessing DB2 Data-bases via TCP/IP

A central database is the heart of every modern enterprise. Thanks to HOBLink J-DRDA, you can make central databases accessible to every user, even in a heterogeneous IT environment. HOBLink J-DRDA is a JDBC Type 4 driver that allows database connectivity to DB2 databases over any TCP/IP network. Via the JDBC interface, HOBLink J-DRDA offers all modern web browsers and Java environments access to the databases. Thanks to its optimized performance, HOBLink J-DRDA allows direct access via Internet, Intranet or Extranet without installing any proprietary middle-ware.

Centralized Installation and Configuration

The web-based HOBLink J-DRDA solution can be installed and configured in a very short time - keeping costs to a minimum.

J-DBrowser Database Query Program

The J-DBrowser, a user-friendly database query tool with a graphical user interface, is included at no extra cost with HOBLink J-DRDA . It is based on JDBC and requires a JRE 1.2 (Java Runtime Environment) or higher, or Java Swing in addition to the JDBC driver. Database queries can be generated, stored and run with a few mouse clicks in the easy-to-use GUI. Additionally, J-DBrowser also supports the conventional entry of complex SQL commands, whereby J-DBrowser provides all the tools the administrator needs to bundle and save complex queries into batch routines (running in batch mode).

Data Security

HOBLink J-DRDA supports the security features of the Java architecture. The digital signature guarantees the security of the loaded Java applets. The authorization mechanism of the host account and the database can still be used, e.g., read or write access for authorized users. With the addition of the HOBLink Secure package, all the data which HOBLink J-DRDA sends over the Internet can be protected with up to 256-bit encryption.

Develop Your Own Java Programs

With HOBLink J-DRDA, any commercially available Java program that supports the JDBC interface can be used for data maintenance. Programs developed by users can access HOBLink J-DRDA via the JDBC 3.0 API . For example, development is possible with:

  • Rational Application Developer
  • Rational Web Developer
  • Borland/Inprise JBuilder
  • Sun ONE Studio
  • IBM Eclipse
  • Sun NetBeans

Access Without TCP/IP on the Host

Host databases can also be accessed via SNA, if, for example, you have no TCP/IP connection or if DRDA via TCP/IP is not supported by DBMS. This is made possible by the “HOB Database Gateway Extension.” This gateway extension provides connections to the DB2/VM, DB2/VSE and DB2/400 database systems.

Client Platform Support

HOBLink J-DRDA runs on every Java-capable platform that supports JDK 1.1.

Top Performance and Scalability

  • Multi-threaded JDBC driver
  • Supports all JDBC classes, numerous data types, and stored procedures
  • Full control of transactions (isolation levels can be set)
  • Implementation of the JDBC 2.0 API

Note:
HOBLink J-DRDA supports JDBC 2.0 with the following exceptions (both of these points cannot be implemented using the DRDA protocol).

  • Freely positionable cursor (scrollable ResultSets)
  • Programmatic updates (updatable ResultSets)

The following Advanced (SQL3) Data Sets are also not supported at this time:

  • ARRAY
  • REF, UDT (user defined types), LOCATOR

The BLOB and CLOB Advanced (SQL3) Data Sets are also supported.

Connectivity to DRDA Databases

HOBLink J-DRDA offers reliable, high-performance database connectivity to the following:

  • DB2 for OS/390 (UDB)
  • DB2/AIX (UDB)
  • DB2/2 (UDB)
  • DB2/Windows NT (UDB)
  • DB2/400 version 4.2 or higher
  • All other DBMS products that correspond to the DRDA architecture

Additionally supported if the HOB Database Gateway Extension is used:

  • DB2 for VSE&VM (formerly SQL/DS)
  • DB2 for MVS
  • DB2/400 up to version 4.2
