Innovation: Printing IBM host data via Java

Newly integrated digital ID technique in HOBLink J-Term for the first time allows printing host data from the Java applet via web.

HOB as of now delivers its Web to host software HOBLink J-Term with enhanced features. Used in combination with HOB's IBM Mainframe software HOBCOM the editing of IBM host data via Internet is optimized and above all, more secure. The IT organization HOB located in Zirndorf is the first manufacturer that offers system print of IBM host data via the World Wide Web. Without HTML conversion.

This solution was introduced live on the CEBIT fair 1998.

While the method used up to now was a highly advanced data encryption technique that provided persistent encryption of the data traffic in HOBLink J-Term and HOBCOM, the printing of host data - encrypted all throughout to the end device - is now being done via the World Wide Web. That is done by involving a digital ID method enhancing the user rights of the client in the Internet and thus makes it possible to print from the Java applet via Web.

Assigning the digital ID is done by loading the applet from HOBLink J-Term on the web. It allows establishing a direct link to the host with HOBLink J-Term's integrated 3270-, 5250-, and VT525 terminal emulation without using the Web Server as a gateway intermediate as it used to be. The system requirement is a browser supporting Java, e.g. Netscape Communicator V.4.03/4.04, including the so-called final patch.

HOBCOM installed on the host on systems with S/390 and S/370 architecture under the operating systems VSE, MVS or VM controls the print of the host data by assigning the clients using session identification, included in the resource name, which was specified during the Client logon.

Attachment to hosts that do not support TCP/IP is done via SAN Server, IBM Communications Server and the additional module Telnet Gateway extension, the latter of which is available from HOB.

Besides numerous tools for structure specific control, for the system administrator administration and automation of work procedures when accessing to host applications, HOBCOM also provides an optimal security for the print data using the lines by integrating a data encryption method following the proven Blowfish algorithm. The user password or optionally the entire 3270 data stream is being encrypted persistently throughout host to the client or printer in a key up to a length of 256 bits while communicating with the host. The only requirement is to install the software HOBCOM on the host, running on systems with S/390- and S/370 architecture under the operating systems VSE, MVS or VM.
