Cadolzburg, 2 March 2009. Enterprises whose employees need to access applications across the entire corporate network in addition to their own workstation PC's find their requirements fully met with the HOB PPP Tunnel, a component of HOB RD VPN.
"For many enterprises, it is not enough to simply provide their employees with access to only their own desktops: They need access to applications from the entire enterprise network. To meet this need, we have developed a special SSL-encrypted solution, the PPP Tunnel," explained HOB's CEO Klaus Brandstätter.
The HOB PPP Tunnel is a component of the secure remote computing solution HOB RD VPN. It provides users with complete, highly performant network access to all central resources and vice versa. Using SSL as the transfer protocol has the advantage that it is supported by all network devices: this is not the case with IPSec. On the local client side, only a Java-capable browser is required; no HOB software nor administrator rights are needed.
Users can authenticate themselves in one of three different, configurable ways, via a:
The optional Integrity Check offers additional security by inspecting the client in accordance with configurable parameters, e.g., scanning it for viruses, before allowing a connection.
After successful authentication over a browser, the user starts the PPP Tunnel with a mouse click and can access all authorized resources in the central network, whereby all protocols, such as TCP, UDP or ICMP are routed through the PPP Tunnel.
After a temporarily interrupted network connection has been restored, the user need not restart the PPP Tunnel, as it automatically resynchronizes itself with the central network. In this case, all applications will usually continue to run on the client without any noticeable interruption.
Once the HOB PPP Tunnel's client components are downloaded, they are cached on the client. When in the central WebSecureProxy (WSP) new components are installed, the PPP tunnel client will detect this the next time a connection is made and will automatically download them.
For server authentication over SSL, the WSP requires an X.509 certificate, such as is used, e.g., in Web servers with SSL/HTTPS.
The configuration and authentication data, e.g., user name and password, are stored either in an XML file in the WSP configuration or in the component HOB Enterprise Access. HOB Enterprise Access supports integrated databases such as LDAP or Microsoft Active Directory.
