Administrators and Users on Easy Street

The new generation of PC-to-Host and Web-to-Host software from HOB promises stress-free administration.

Cadolzburg, Germany, September 10, 2001.  HOB, a leading international manufacturer and vendor for server-based computing solutions, announced today the release of two new products: HOBLink Terminal Edition version 5.1 and HOBLink J-Term version 3.1. Both of these software packages are also a part of HOB Enterprise Access, the “all-in-one” migration and application portal solution premiered at CeBIT 2001 in Hanover, Germany.

According to the HOB management, the products mark the beginning of the company’s new generation of application providing software. Klaus Brandstaetter, founder and CEO of HOB, indicated that the entire product range is being revised to accommodate HOB Enterprise Access philosophy. Further announcements of adapted versions will follow shortly.

HOBLink Terminal Edition and HOBLink J-Term are equipped with an interface to HOB Enterprise Access, which itself is composed of several modules. Working together, these components allow access to central applications and data on any corporate server for enterprises and their users in the Internet and Intranet as well as for partners in an Extranet. A significant feature shared by these products as well as by those coming in the future is a single point of administration for all HOB solutions and their sessions running on the respective servers/hosts.

“Making system administration as free from stress as possible and at the same time providing very easy access to all applications for authorized users, independent of location” are the primary goals of the new HOB software generation, says Brandstaetter. “Help calls can be reduced up to 90% with this solution.”

Following this basic principle, HOBLink Terminal Edition 5.1 and HOBLink J-Term 3.1 offer the following key features (besides the uniform user interface already mentioned): A new single sign-on function requires only a one-time host logon and authentication, both for stationary clients (HOBLink Terminal Edition) as well as for connections via the Web (HOBLink J-Term). This supports flexible, user-friendly host application switching. In addition, configurable hot spots allow an effective interplay among the individual application windows and promote productive work in one or several servers simultaneously. GUI-on-the-fly functionality – now also integrated in Terminal Edition – brings an ad hoc Windows look and feel to alphanumeric host applications. Moreover, system managers get a number of tools that let them execute user-specific and workgroup “auto sessions” with macro routines that can be started via user-friendly screen icons. Both products also support the standard interfaces OHIO, HLLAPI and OLE. Additionally, HOBLink Terminal Edition 5.1 and HOBLink J-Term 3.1 provide full support for IBM Office Vision, the office package for the AS/400.

HOB Enterprise Access – Short Description

This software solution consists of various modules developed for the 32-bit Windows as well as the Java environments and encompasses components for servers as well as client computers. Enterprise Access provides identical user interfaces perfectly harmonized for all software components and clients equipped with Web and Windows-based emulations. This provides transparent access to applications and data on any server, corporate-wide, for users in the Intranet/Internet as well as for partners in an Extranet.

HOB Enterprise Access provides the system administrator complete support for “single point of administration” for all software components needed to access server systems. A management tool installed on a cross-platform basis handles the central storage of all user-related settings. HOB also guarantees compatibility to other administration servers by supporting the LDAP interface (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol). The only requirement for using Enterprise Access is a Java Virtual Machine.

With HOBLink Terminal Edition and HOBLink J-Term, HOB Enterprise Access provides Web-based and Windows-based access to all data and applications on IBM mainframes, AS/400 and Unix/DEC host systems. During the course of this year, software modules for Enterprise Access will be added to the solution one after the other. To enable smooth integration into existing system architectures, the software supports all standard interfaces such as OLE, DCOM, DDE, OHIO and EHLLAPI. The solution can also be expanded to include HOBLink Secure, the cryptography software with strong encryption and client authentication providing the customer with “no holes” security for mission-critical enterprise data. Additionally, HOB Enterprise Access is equipped with a Proxy Server.
