HOBLink JWT V.2.2 Now Available

The new release of HOBLink JWT provides “Enhanced Terminal Services”

Cadolzburg, Germany, August 8, 2001.  HOB, an international manufacturer of server-based computing solutions, announced today the immediate release of version 2.2 of HOBLink JWT, its Java client for Windows Terminal Server access. Significant new “Enhanced Terminal Services” have been integrated in version 2.2. As a first step, this includes support for “Application Publishing” and “Load Balancing”. Other features will be included in the “Enhanced Terminal Services” in the near future.

Print functionality has also been greatly expanded under the rubric of “Universal Printer Support”, which includes the following print options: Local Print, IP Print, LPR/LPD Print and “Easy Print”. With the Easy Print option, the administrator no longer needs to install additional printer drivers on the Windows Terminal Server in order to support local printers. Only one driver is required on the WTS which is normally pre-installed on delivery. This driver sends the print data to the HOBLink JWT client, which then preprocesses it for the local printer driver and makes local printing possible. On the client computer, printing is handled as with a locally installed application. Since the pre-installed driver on the WTS has been tested for multi-user capability, any problems caused by incompatible or faulty printer drivers are eliminated.

For customers employing a server farm, a very important feature of HOBLink JWT is its automatic “load balancing” function, which routes client access to the server with the least load, insuring an efficient, fast connection to the desired applications. The HOBLink JWT Load Balancing function allows automatic connection to a server either over a broadcast function or by selection from a pre-defined list of servers. A further plus feature now offered is an automatic re-connect function or an automatic restoration of the last session after a system crash.

If an additional security solution is needed for HOBLink JWT, HOBLink Secure may be obtained as an add-on. This product includes a separate proxy server – “WebSecureProxy” – which, according to HOB, offers a feature that is unique on the market. the proxy server supports four services at the same time over a single TCP/IP port – application publishing, load balancing, SSL encryption and the RDP session. Therefore, if an enterprise is using one or more firewalls, the administrator only has to open one port. In this scenario, the terminal servers remain protected by the firewalls and must not be directly accessible over the Internet.

Based on the Microsoft RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol), HOBLink JWT allows browser-based, platform-independent access to Windows applications running under Windows NT Server 4.0 (Terminal Server Edition) as well as Windows 2000 Server (Terminal Services). Windows as well as non-Windows client platforms – e.g. Macintosh, Unix, NCs and handheld PCs – are supported. Besides the client component, the product also includes a software module to implement the load balancing feature.

Last year HOBLink JWT received the NT 2000 Award for the “Best Third-Party Tool for Windows NT/2000”.
