The Motto for HOB at This Year’s CeBIT: Server-based Enterprise Solutions

CeBIT 2001, Hannover, Germany, March 22 - 28, 2001, Hall 11, Booth G25

Zirndorf, Germany, February 12, 2001. HOB, the Connectivity specialist and pioneer in Java-based computing, announced today it will focus on “Server-based Enterprise Solutions” at this year’s CeBIT, presenting new products as well as further developments of existing products.

In keeping with this motto, HOB will debut its modular enterprise software for server-based computing at the CeBIT, which will be marketed under the name “HOBLink Enterprise J-Portal” and can be purchased as early as the second quarter of 2001. This will make HOB, a member of the Brandstaetter Group (which includes the world famous Playmobil concern), one of the first European developers of an enterprise portal which allows access to any data or application server.

In addition to the HOBLink Enterprise J-Portal, HOB will attempt to strengthen its position in this market with another new development, HOBLink UWT. Completely new versions of the following products will also be premiered:

  • HOBLink JWT v. 2.2
  • HOBLink J-Term v. 3.1
  • HOBLink Terminal Edition v. 5.1
  • HOBDB connect for Sun Solaris
  • Smart card solution for HOBLink Secure and inclusion of a proxy server for UNIX/Solaris
HOBLink Enterprise J-Portal - New Product

This new development is composed of different modules for either 32-bit Windows or Java platforms and which are installed partly on the server and partly on the client. Fine-tuned to the other HOB products, the Portal is designed to allow enterprises and their users in Intranet and Internet as well as partners in the Extranet to access applications and data on any server corporate-wide. In addition, the software includes efficient tools which guarantee cost-effective, central administration and storage of all user-specific configurations. All that is required for the Portal is a JVM (Java Virtual Machine).

HOBLink UWT - New Product

HOBLink UWT is the UNIX counterpart to the HOBLink JWT Java solution, which provides browser-based access to applications on Microsoft Windows Terminal Servers for all front-ends, i.e., both Microsoft and non-Microsoft clients. HOBLink UWT has been optimized for UNIX/Linux clients which require access to Windows Terminal Server NT 4.0, TSE or Windows 2000 Server/Advanced Server/Data Center Server with integrated Terminal Services, and allows users to work with virtually any application running on these servers. Platforms currently supported include computers running on Solaris 7 and Solaris 8 and Intel computers with Linux platforms. Support for further UNIX/Linux platforms will follow shortly.

HOBLink JWT v. 2.2 - Further Development

HOBLink JWT has been expanded to include Application Publishing as well as much improved printer functionality. Only a single printer driver must be installed on the Windows Terminal Server. This driver converts all data to be printed into PCL (Printer Control Language) and sends this to the client. HOBLink JWT is now capable of processing this PCL data, creating one or more virtual pages and printing these pages via the printer driver installed locally on the client. This improved print processing adds to stability in multi-user operation and greatly simplifies the configuration of the client printer. According to HOB, this should also help avoid server failures due to faulty printer drivers.
Further, HOB is also offering enterprises a special service package which allows interested customers to receive a completely pre-configured WTS system for on-site pilot tests. As an alternative, companies can run remote tests on the HOB WTS systems using their own WTS application software.

HOBLink J-Term v. 3.1 and HOBLink Terminal Edition - Further Development

Following the lead of the HOBLink Enterprise J-Portal, both of these software products are now equipped with a uniform user interface. Terminal emulations for 3270, 5250 and VT525 are included in each package, either Java-based (HOBLink J-Term) or Windows-based (HOBLink Terminal Emulation). Additionally, both products support the same data basis for user management and provide full support for “single point of administration”, which allows the system administrator to view all settings and user data clearly displayed in a single window. HOBLink Terminal Edition is now also equipped standard with “GUI-on-the-fly” functionality, a feature for quick, automatic transformation of alphanumeric screens into the familiar graphical look & feel of Windows. Further new features focus on user-friendly, supplementary functions. The HOBLink J-Term Web-to-Host package is now additionally available in a compact version containing only one emulation type of the customer’s choice; this can be expanded as needed. A further significant improvement in HOBLink J-Term is enhanced session management.

HOBLink Secure - Further Development

This high-performance cryptography software based on Java or 32-bit Windows will be demonstrated for the first time at the CeBIT in combination with the new smartcard functionality, which provides a new level of security. An additional plus implemented in this version is improved performance using a proxy server for Solaris.

HOBDB connect for Sun Solaris - Further Development

HOBDB connect has now been ported to the Solaris platform. This database gateway consists of a two-component solution and allows for high-performance access to the following database management systems: Oracle, Informix, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase and others. In addition, the software allows for direct access to the above databases from an AS/400. At this year’s CeBIT HOBDB connect for Sun Solaris will be presented for the first time and marketed in combination with HOBLink DRDA for Windows platforms or HOBLink J-DRDA for platform-independent access via Java.
