Load Balancing Act

The new release of HOBLink JWT, Version 1.2, promises optimized load balancing. Other new features include international keyboard layouts, a “Smart Update” function and “Application Serving”.

Zirndorf, Germany, August 16, 2000. HOB announced today the availability of the new release of HOBLink JWT, its Java-based Windows Terminal.

Based on the Microsoft RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) HOBLink JWT allows multi-user access to Windows applications running on MS Windows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition as well as Windows 2000 Server (Terminal Services). The product provides access for all clients, including Windows and non-Microsoft front ends, for example, Macintosh, UNIX, NCs and handheld PCs. The software consists of a client component and an optional server component for load balancing.

The chief enhanced functionality included in the product is improved load balancing for server farms. Additionally, the keyboard layout support was extended to include not only US English, French and German, but also Spanish, Dutch and Portuguese.

Another new feature is the "Smart Update", which allows the HOBLink JWT applet to be installed locally in the client browser, making it unnecessary to load it at the beginning of each session. A version check is run simultaneously, and the applet is updated if a new version is detected on the server.

Administrators can now also pre-configure "Application-Serving", which starts a certain application automatically when the HOBLink JWT client logs in.

Load Balancing

One of the most important functions of this product is the integrated load balancing technology, which is critical for the formation of server farms and is included with delivery at no extra charge.

System administrators can configure HOB Load Balancing according to the requirements of the individual user. They can pick the optimum configuration from three possible settings in order to insure a productive working environment for the user:

1. Fixed: Here, the administrator configures exactly one Windows Terminal Server. As a result, the client is automatically routed to this target server (load balancing deactivated).

2. Broadcast: The client sends a request into the network and is connected either to the server with the least load or to the first responding server, depending on the configuration. A third option allows the user to display a list of all responding servers and choose the one he wants.

3. List of Servers: Similar to "Broadcast", except that the servers to be used are defined in a list and saved in a file. This makes it possible to assign servers to certain work groups and departments, the ideal solution for the Internet, where general broadcasts are usually not allowed to pass through routers.

The HOB Load Balancing solution is not based on a "master browser" concept. This guarantees that, if the connection to one server is interrupted, the client can immediately re-connect to another server. When the user terminates a session without logging off, he is also assured of being able to re-connect to his own "disconnected session".

With the introduction of HOBLink JWT, HOB was the first software publisher to successfully implement a completely platform-independent tool for accessing Windows applications via RDP.

If a higher level of security is required, HOBLink JWT may be supplemented with the HOBLink Secure encryption software, based on SSL Ver. 3.0.

Recently, HOB with HOBLink JWT was awarded the NT Award 2000 for the best third-party tool for Windows NT/2000.

The new release will be available in August.
